Only a few decades ago, Playa del Carmen was a deserted beach where Indian families raised coconut palm and the odd foreigner wandered in to get away from it all. Today it is a lively cosmopolitan city with the highest urban growth in the country.
Playa is a fantastic place to spend your vacation, hang out or even live. The town has grown along the beach so no matter where you go you will feel close to the water. 5th Avenue or Quinta Avenida is where you can see the majority of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.
Originally a small fishing town, tourism to Playa del Carmen began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island across the Cozumel Channel and world famous scuba diving destination. While passing through, many people realized that it was a nice place to relax away from the crowds of Cancun but with the same quality beaches and turquoise waters. Perhaps just as impressive as Cozumel, Playa del Carmens coast offers good scuba diving opportunities, as well as cenote diving for the more adventurous.
In December 2010, during the UN sponsored COP 16, the "
Cancun Agreement" was created, this important document locks in emissions reductions targets for 80% of global emissions, notably including China and the US.
